Act1, scene1, lines 20-25 " Full of vexation come I, with complaint Against my child, my daughter Hermia. Stand forth, Demetrius. My noble lord, This man hath my consent to marry her." Before this quote Egeus (Hermia's father)told Hermia that she can only marry Demetrius. Hermia only loves Lysander. The only choices that Hermia has is to marry Demetrius or be killed by her own father or be sent to a nunnery and die a virgin. During this passage Egeus is talking to Theseus (the prime minister) about how Hermia is not choosing what to do. Theseus agrees with Egeus and gives Hermia until the next full moon to tell them her decision. Lysander decides to run away with Hermia to a place far enough so the Athen law can not impose on there love. While they are planning there escape Helena over hears them say that they will meet at night in the forest.Helena tells Demetrius and the both of them follow each other into the forest as they fall asleep. As they are sleeping the fairies put magical potions on there eyes and that makes everything ten times more complicated. This quote shows that Egeus doesn't care about his daughter and would kill her if she doesn't obey. Egeus: disrespectful Act1, scene1, lines 95-100 "Scronful Lysander! true, he hath my love, And what is mine my love shall render him. And she is mine, and all my right of her I do estate unto Demetrius." Earlier in the book Egeus just announced that Hermia will have to wed or be dead to Demetrius. Hermia is in love with Lysander not Demetrius. Egues went to Theseus , the mayor, to consult him about what Hermia should and should NOT be able to do. Theseus agreed with Egues and gave Hermia until the next full moon to make up her mind. Egues said this quote because Lysander tried to defend there love and Egues took it as being disrespectful. The only way that Hermia and Lysander where able to wed is make a secret plan to run away. Hermia over hears their plan and tells Demetrius. As day falls the four young lovers go into the forest and the fairies make up a plan and that makes everything complicated. Now you know Egeus is disrespectful and uncaring. Egeus: unloving Act1, scene1, line 39-40 " Be it so she will not here before your grace Consent to marry with Demetrius" At the moment Egues is in the office of Theseus, duke of Athens. He is there because he has just told his daughter that she is not able to marry the one she loves, Lysander. Instead she has to marry the ugly and disrespectful Demetrius. Helena, Hermia's sister, loves Demetrius but Demetrius does not like her one bit. This quote basically means that Egeus is telling Lysander that Hermia will not marry him and will marry Demetrius. Hermia and Lysander decide to elope. They will meet in the forest at night. Helena over hears and thinks that if she tells Demetrius he will love her.as all four of them go into the forest they fall asleep. When they sleep the fairies put a spell on there eyes. And everything gets complicated. That quote shows that Egeus really has Hermia's life planned out and if she doesn't follow it she dies. His heart is three times to small so it can't hold any love towards anyone. |
